Welcome!

Where the Mediterranean part of Slovenia meets the mainland, where limestone and fysch meet face to face, the diversity of the landscape overwhelms us, the bora blows and the home cooking allures us to stay. Natural and cultural heritage invite travellers to visit the world-famous sights, as well as to explore the hidden spots.

This brochure is the result of cooperation between LAG for Rural Development of the Land between Snežnik and Nanos and LAG of the Karst and Brkini, thus uniting an area which is geographically already united.

Water is an important creator of life, and this is refected in cultural as well as natural environment. Mighty waters, nourished by the Karst underworld, create a wonderful world below as well as above the surface. It is not true that only the inhabitants of the Karst are familiar with the wind bora. It also sweeps the Brkini hills and at the foot of the Nanos.

Traditional dishes invite us to the countryside where tourist farms would serve us homemade prosciutto, pancetta, zašinek, jota and other minestrones, krompir v zevnici (potatoes in cabbage water), polenta, and gnocchi.

The soil, the environment and the hard-working people add their share to the taste of local spirits. In the Brkini it is the plum brandy, in the Karst, the red wine teran, and the cure for all aches is the juniper brandy.
